Recital Attendance Requirement
One of the factors that make the Lee University major and minor in music a unique learning experience is the wide variety of significant activities in which students participate. One facet of this broadly-conceived design is a requirement that all majors and minors in music regularly attend recitals and/or concerts given by professional and student musicians. The School of Music is committed to the idea that this activity provides for learning that is critical to a student's preparation for success in a chosen music profession in at least three ways:
  1. Exposure to a variety of music literature beyond that which is possible in the studio.

  2. Awareness of audience perspective to be applied to personal performance.

  3. Observation of professional standards of performance.

Therefore, as a requirement for completion of a music degree, every student majoring in music is required to enroll in and successfully complete Performance Seminar for seven semesters.  Graded on a pass/fail basis, this course receives zero hours credit. A passing grade is based on the attendance at sixty percent (60%) of Performance Seminar offerings per semester and 9 additional music events. The additional concerts must come from the categories of vocal, instrumental, and ensemble music, three (3) of each

Students minoring in music are required to enroll in and successfully complete Performance Seminar for four semesters.  Graded on a pass/fail basis, this course receives zero hours credit.  A passing grade is based on the attendance at sixty (60%) percent of Performance Seminar offerings per semester and six (6) additional music events. The additional concerts must come from the categories of vocal, instrumental, and ensemble music, two (2) of each

Performance Seminar meets every Thursday afternoon at 4 p.m. in Squires Recital Hall located in the Center for the Humanities.  Class roll will be taken electronically on the way in and out of class. Therefore, students entering late or leaving early will not receive credit for attendance at class.  To receive credit for the remaining required off-campus events or on-campus performances, where roll is not taken by a School of Music representative, the student must bring a program, along with a completed Recital Attendance Verification Form, to the Music Office within seven business days of the event.  A student is expected to attend the entire performance in order to receive credit. No exceptions will be made. Campus Events are posted in the following places:

    • Lee University Website: School of Music calendar
    • Plasma Screen located in the first floor lobby of the School of Music
    • Bulletin boards in the School of Music
    • Plasma Screen located in the Center for the Humanities

Be sure you receive prior approval for what you plan to attend to ensure proper credit. Exceptions to this policy are only granted by the Dean of the School of Music. Performance Seminar requirements for a transfer student will be handled on an individual basis by the Dean for the School of Music and will be faithful to the spirit of the requirement for non-transfer students.

To attend less than the required number of recitals/performances in a semester constitutes failure for the course and will require another entire semester of successful Performance Seminar enrollment.    No student will be given credit for any performance in which he/she is a participant in more than one program item.
    Suggested Performance/Recital Options include:

    • Other college/university events
    • Open rehearsals or performances of professional music organizations such as symphony, opera, and the like.
    • Jazz ensembles
    • Chamber music

Church performances are not typically in the spirit of the requirement.  Please email music@leeuniverisity.edu when you have questions about this requirement.
