From the Dean

From the Dean of the School of Music,

College is a most exciting time in the life of every student. I well remember my 24-hour drive from New York City to a little town in Missouri where I had never been. Although from a very large city and used to “running around” on my own, that trip to an unfamiliar town where I had few if any acquaintances, was quite daunting. That new roommate, and oh the laundry and the absence of mom’s cooking…..how well I remember and how well you know or will soon know! That is why the faculty and staff of the Lee University School of Music are eager to be your new support group. We are the people who will care for you during your stay here. We will spend many hours together, and what rewarding times they will be; making music, learning about music, becoming more musical, becoming music professionals! It is sure to be a fantastic journey if you will apply yourself to learning and work to synthesize all you hear, learn, and experience.

This handbook has been compiled with you in mind. It answers your questions about being music major and minor. It also spells out policies regarding what is required of you. It provides information on how to meet each requirement so that you can excel and graduate in a timely manner. All of the faculty are listed herein with the degrees they have earned and the highly regarded schools from where they have earned them. The booklet introduces you to our well-equipped Music Resource Center, its hours of operation and other important information about its operation and contents. If you have questions regarding music scholarships, you can read descriptions of those available. For answers you cannot find, you will need to ask someone who knows and someone who can answer accurately your questions. In so doing you will discover warm and receptive people, placed here providentially to help you. We want your experience in the School of Music at Lee to be all you anticipate, all you desire, and all you will need for a future career as a music professional whether you choose to serve the church, school, or elsewhere in the greater profession.

The Curtsinger Music Building and the new Center for the Humanities Building are beautiful and quite functional. They are pleasant places in which to study and make music as is the Music Annex. As music majors, minors, and active music enthusiasts, these buildings will become your home away from home. Great care has been taken to make sure these facilities are well-equipped and in good working order. Please help us preserve these spaces for the people who will follow after you and for ourselves as well. Treat equipment with care and please be respectful and considerate of each other as we practice and learn together. At times these buildings are full and very busy. Take pride in this place and what happens here. What you put into your education is certainly what you will take away. Keep a positive attitude. You will be surprised how this will help you accomplish all that is needed for a successful future. And “….whatever you do, in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord.” (Col. 3:17)

Let me know if I can be of service to you. I look forward to meeting and working with each one of you!

Sincerely,
Stephen W. Plate, D.M.A
