A graduate of Beijing Central Conservatory of
Music, Mr. Xiaoqing Yu came to the US in 1986
and soon, as a recipient of Manhattan School of
Music Scholarship, Mr. Yu furthered his graduate
studies under the prominent violin professor
Rafael Bronstein at the Manhattan School of
Music in New York City.
A native of China, Mr. Yu is in his eleventh
season as concertmaster of the Greenville
symphony Orchestra. Over the years, Mr. Yu has
performed with various music groups in Europe
and Canada and worked closely with the Cleveland
and the Emerson string quartets. He was featured
on Philadelphia’s classical music station “WFLN”
which was broadcast live on prime time. Mr. Yu
performs regularly with Charlotte Symphony
Orchestra and other chamber music groups. Every
summer Mr. Yu performs some 46 performances of 4
Operas festival in New York.
Prior to joining the Greenville Symphony, Mr. Yu
served as principal second violinist of the
American Chamber Orchestra and performed in over
100 major European cities, including Barcelona,
Madrid, Luxembourg, Brussels, Frankfurt, Munich,
Berlin, Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Rotterdam,
Amsterdam, Florence, Sienna, among others.
While at the Manhattan School, Mr. Yu served as
Co-principal second violin of the National
Orchestra and performed in numerous concert
halls including Carnegie concert hall, recital
hall, and the Lincoln Center. He was featured on
New York City’s famed classical station “WQXR”
which was broadcast live nationwide. Before
coming to the US, Mr. Yu had performed
throughout China with various music groups, as
well as the National symphony orchestra.
Mr. Yu has won second prize of the Young Artist
Competition of Atlanta Pro-Mozart Society; First
prize of USC Concerto-Aria Competition, and
Honorary Award of the Young Artist Competition,
subsequently, as a soloist, Mr. YU performed
Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 4 and 5. Other solo
engagements have included the performances of
works by Mozart, Saint-Saens, Wieniawski,
Vieutemps, Vivaldi with various symphony
orchestras.
Mr. Yu was recently appointed as Concertmaster
and Artistic consultant of the Charlotte Civic
Orchestra, and Violin faculty of Charlotte
School of the Arts. Other engagements have
included teaching at Furman University and South
Carolina Governor’s school of the Arts.
Compact disc recordings have included 6 Violin
Sonatas by Rossini; Suite for string Orchestra
by Janacek; The Death and the Maiden by
Schubert; Transfigured Night by Scheonberg with
American Chamber Orchestra in Spain with a Swiss
recording label, the “Clave”.
